Hackensack Hospital at Ellis Island

It started as a way for the hospital staff to pay tribute to the cancer patients and survivors that they work with on a daily basis. The event, which took place on Ellis Island, brought together hundreds of people for the shared experience of celebrating life. As a small part of this unique experience, we were hired to create a public art project where participants could decorate a small part of a larger piece of art. We decided that the most practical material for this one day event was fabric and so we created two 10' x 4' banners. As the theme of the day was "Celebrating Life and Liberty" we created a "Celebrating Life" banner and a "Celebrating Liberty" banner. Participants were invited to decorate a strip of fabric using paints, markers, glued fabric and collage. We then glued their work to the final image.
